Near the water. Near the port.

I arrived in Athens in early July 2021, by plane from Berlin. It was not the first time I had been to the city, but it was the first time I had been to the outskirts. I was longing to go to see the water, the port, the beach to see the turmoil I knew I could find there. I met Q who introduced me to his chosen beach family. He told me he prefers to stay at the beach because his home is too loud and overcrowded.

We connected instinctively. We laughed. I left, he stayed.

Months later I read Teju Cole's essay about following the traces of Caravaggio...Greece, too. His thoughts about the port inevitably brought me back to my encounters there, as he wrote: "A port is where a given territory is most amenable to arrival and to escape, where a stranger has a chance to feel less strange."
